Whenever you hit the road, it’s worth thinking about when you’ll need some new tires. Tires may not be the flashiest part of your new ride, but they’re a major part of what will keep you safe and sound in your vehicle. So how do you know when it’s time to replace those tires?

Getting New Tires for Used Cars

The Penny Test

Go and find yourself a penny. It’s about to become your used car’s best friend. If you stick that penny between the tread grooves, keep an eye on Lincoln’s head. If you can’t see Lincoln’s head, it’s time to hit the tire store! You need at least 2/32” of tread depth for optimal safety and performance.

Uneven Wear

Ever feel like your used car’s doing the tango? Uneven tire wear could be the culprit. This can happen due to misalignment, improper inflation, or simply the natural aging process. Check your tires for cupping (uneven dips and bumps) or feathering (thin edges like feathers). You might need a tire rotation or even replacement tires at that point.

The Age Factor

Even if tires look okay, the rubber degrades over time, losing its flexibility and grip. As a general rule of thumb, consider replacing your used car’s tires every five years or so, regardless of tread depth. It’s a proactive approach to safety, and let’s be honest, a new set of tires always adds a touch of shine to any used car.

Bulges and Leaks

If you see any suspicious bulges or hear any air leaking out of your used car’s tires, don’t drive that car! Bulges indicate internal damage, while a leak could mean a potential blowout waiting to happen. Don’t risk it – call a tow truck and get those tires replaced ASAP. Your safety (and everyone else’s on the road) is just too important not to.

A Symphony of Squeals

Be mindful of any unusual noises, especially squealing when cornering or braking. This could be a sign of worn tread or misalignment. Don’t ignore these squeaks, as they’re your tires’ way of saying, “Hey, something’s not right!”.

Keep Eye on Your TPMS

That little light on your dash isn’t just a pretty decoration. Your Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) tells you when your tires are feeling deflated, which can affect handling and fuel efficiency of your vehicle and can also mean uneven tire wear.
